Denmark barely had time to wash their kit when they headed to Sweden for Euro 1992. The Danes were drafted in as a late replacement for Yugoslavia, who had been disqualified due to the actions of their government.
Well most of them were – captain Michael Laudrup refused to cancel his holiday. He probably wishes he hadn’t, because against, all odds, Denmark went on to win the competition, in this incredible Hummel effort.
So this is one of those ones that’s iconic for all the wrong reasons. Belgium actually did pretty poorly in Euro 1984. They went out in the group stages, being beaten by eventual winners, and fierce rivals, France, in the process.
But even if their performances weren’t memorable, their kit certainly was. With a checked diamond-pattern band around the midriff, it looked more like something you’d find down the local golf club than on a football pitch.
