The 15 highest paid female athletes of 2016 earned an impressive $150 million from salary, endorsements, prize money, appearances and licensing.
The global group come from eight different countries, with tennis players mainly dominating the list.
It’s unlikely that the list will change from only containing female athletes in non-team sports any time soon, as there is no women’s counterpart to the big earners in male sports, such as the NFL or MLB. In sports where there are counterparts, such as the WNBA in basketball, women’s salaries lag far behind.
As a result, this list mainly consists of tennis players and golfers, who rely on equal prize money and sponsorship opportunities as men to make big bucks.
