Buck Shelford, 1986
Wayne “Buck” Shelford was a formidable New Zealand number 8 and captain. In a game against France back in 1986, Shelford found himself at the bottom of the ruck when the boot of a French forward ripped open his scrotum, leaving a testicle hanging free. He also lost four teeth in the incident.
True to character, Buck calmly asked the physio to stitch up his scrotum, and swiftly returned to the field. It was just Shelford’s second appearance for the All Blacks
David Busst, 1996
David Busst was a late bloomer in soccer terms. He made is league debut, for Coventry City, at the age of 25. In his first season at the Sky Blues, the unfortunately named Busst snapped his leg in two in a game against Manchester United. He was attacking a corner when he collided with Dennis Irwin and Brian McClair, shattering his right leg, and piercing the skin in the process.
Busst, who nearly had to have the leg amputated, was forced to retire from the game. Many Man Utd and Coventry players required counselling following the incident, which has been described as the worst injury in soccer history,
