After appearing in several Summer Olympics held between 1984 and 1996, Carl Lewis must have called up his carpenter and asked for a bigger shelf. That’s because this track-and-field star managed to amass a total of nine gold medals during that time period. Even more incredible, that’s nine gold medals for the ten events for which he qualified!
6. Florence Griffith Joyner
When Florence brought home three gold medals during the 1988 Summer Olympics, the world dubbed her “The Fastest Woman of All Time”. It’s easy to understand why, as during the 200-meter semifinal she set a world record by clocking a time of 21.56 seconds. Then in the final, she smashed that world record by recording a time of 21.34, a mark that still stands today.
