While not an athlete herself, Martha fought on behalf of female golfers the world over when she railed against Augusta National’s tradition of not admitting female members. She finally got Augusta National to relent in 2012.
8. Tommie Smith and John Carlos Raise Their Fists
During the 1968 Olympics, athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos raised their fist in support of those who were working to end apartheid in South Africa. They were subsequently kicked out of the Olympics for making a political statement.
