Carson freely admitted that he had an addiction to alcohol, but he avoided the media and press as much as possible so he did not have to respond to claims of his alcoholism.
In a 1977 interview with 60 Minutes, Carson admitted there was a time when he used to drink. “I don’t handle alcohol well at all, no. Really don’t,” said Carson. “Oh, Ed [McMahon] and I have had some wonderful times in the past.”
Johnny And Joanne
One of Johnny’s most well-known relationships was with his second wife Joanne Copeland. Copland worked as an air stewardess for Pan American World Airways when she went on her first date with Carson. He was working as a game show host. After the pair married, Copeland had a serious affair with a sportsman, Frank Gifford, while Johnny also had numerous infidelities.
Their 9-year marriage ended in 1972, but despite their split Copeland still tried her hardest to preserve her ex-husband’s TV legacy.
