Former Rangers midfielder and Honduran international Arnold Peralta has been shot dead in a car park in his home country.
Peralta, 26, who was playing for local team Olimpia, was in a shopping mall car park in La Ceiba when he was assassinated.
The midfielder who left Rangers in January is thought to be the latest victim of the well documented gang related violence in Honduras.
The country with an estimated population of just 8 million has one of the highest murder rates in the world.
Peralta featured for Honduras at the London 2012 Olympics and played during their latest world cup campaign.
The Police Commissioner, Leonel Sauceda confirmed Peralta had been shot and it was unlikely the motive was robbery as Peralta’s possessions weren’t taken.
He also added that it was likely to have been ‘two assassins in a vehicle’ but failed to confirm that they had any leads in the investigation.
