Australian Open Day Two Round-Up
With the men winning the Davis Cup at the end of 2015, everyone involved in British Tennis had hoped their golden run would continue into 2016 in the Australian Open.
The run looks set to continue, with Andy Murray advancing with ease in the first round against Alexander Zverev (6-1,6-2,6-3) and a brilliant performance from Johanna Konta on Day One.
Konta, 25, beat former World number one Venus Williams in straight sets (6-2,6-4) in the Rod Laver Arena to claim a famous victory and first real shock of the tournament.
Britain’s number one is currently ranked 49th in world and was born in Australia before moving to the UK when she was 11 years old.
There was another shock in the mens draw as Fernando Verdasco knocked out fellow Spaniard and 5th seed Rafael Nadal 7-6(6) 4-6 3-6 7-6(4) 6-2.
Nadal who has struggled with his knee injuries looked beaten at the end of the five set epic.
