English Premier League side Arsenal have announced they will play a Major League Soccer All-Star team in a pre-season match in California on 28 July 2016.
The match will take place in San Jose Earthquakes’ Avaya Stadium, before the Gunners face Mexican side Chivas in Los Angeles on 31 July.
The MLS side chosen by a combination of fan voting and selections by the appointed manager and league commissioner, have faired well against top opposition since the series started in 2005.
Arsenal follow in the footsteps of fellow Premier League teams Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham who have all played the All-Star XI in recent seasons.
The fixture has favoured the MLS side who have won seven of the 11 matches against their overseas ‘guests’.
Last year, a Kaka penalty helped seal a 2-1 win for the All-Star’s against Tottenham Hotspur in Colorado.
MLS commissioner Don Garber expressed his delight in the announcement:
“We are pleased to welcome Arsenal, one of the most successful clubs in the world, to compete against the best of MLS.”
San Jose Earthquakes season ticket holders will receive an exclusive pre-sale opportunity to purchase tickets.
All others will have the chance to buy tickets to the 2016 MLS All-Star Game through a lottery system.
