Former world champion Manny Pacquiao has caused uproar in the gay community after calling homosexuals “worse than animals” in a television interview.

Interviewed by local station TV5, the Philippine boxer responded with: “It’s common sense. Will you see any animals where male is to male and female is to female?”

And continued with: “The animals are better. They know how to distinguish male from female. If we approve [of] male on male, female on female, then man is worse than animals.”

Pacquiao is a conservative Christian politician and is running for a senate seat in the May elections.

But his recent comments has sparked controversy in the country with the Local Gay Rights Organisation responding with their own comment:

“His comment betrays a shallow understanding of sexual orientation and gender identity, his lack of understanding gay rights issues leaves him in the dark ages when the cavemen ruled and the numbskulls roamed the earth”.

Pacquiao was quick to apologise for his comments, stating: “I’m sorry for hurting people by comparing homosexuals to animals. Please forgive me for those I’ve hurt. God Bless!”

Bizarrely because of his popularity, there has been split views in the Philippines, with a lot of his fellow Christian followers showing support for his comments.
