Despite the MLS attracting high profile stars and the league improving in recent years, most American players dream of playing in Europe.

While players like Brad Friedel, Clint Dempsey and Brad Guzan have made successful careers in Europe, many have tried and failed.

15. Brek Shea


Shea arrived in Stoke, England in January 2013 from FC Dallas.

After the success of Geoff Cameron, big things were expected of the left-back but after just five games for City he was sent on loan to Barnsley and Birmingham.

After disappointing spells at both clubs he was sold to Orlando City.

14. Marcus Tracy


Marcus Tracy arrived at Danish Aalborg in 2009 from Houston with big expectations.

After initially impressing he was struck with awful injuries which meant he never made real career progress and hasn’t been drafted since 2013.
