The Notorious Conor McGregor’s unbeaten UFC streak came to a shocking end as Nate Diaz claimed a shock win at UFC 196.
McGregor, despite going up two weight divisions, went into the fight an overwhelming bookies favourite yet he was choked out by Diaz on Saturday night in Las Vegas.
As expected, McGregor came out the traps fast causing enough damage to force blood from Diaz’s right eye in the first round.
But Diaz, who let McGregor do all the talking in the pre-fight interviews and press conferences, had the final say as he landed a rear naked choke in the closing stages of the second round.
The win is Diaz’s biggest of his career and will certainly set him up for a lot more bigger fights in the future.
This result surely won’t deter McGregor but he may think twice about moving up to Welterweight again. He said of the fight:
“I took the chance going up to 170,”
“But Nate came in. I felt I took him the first round. I was inefficient with my energy. I’m humble in victory or defeat. He was efficient. I wasn’t efficient.”
Diaz’s win wasn’t the only shock of the night as defending champion Holly Holm was also choked out by her opponent in the Bantamweight title fight.
Her rival Miesha Tate may have lost the match on a decision had it not been for her final round submission win.
Tate’s win means she will face her fiercest rival Ronda Rousey next as she attempts to defend her new title.
